Polymetric training program

SPEED supported a research initiative of the Sports Science Department of the University of Sabaragamuwa to determine the effect of six weeks plyometric training program on the acceleration and explosive power in grade eight male students in Abhayapura Maha Vidyalaya, Trincomalee.

The objectives of the exercise were to

  • To determine appropriate plyometric training period to develop lower limb acceleration,
  • To determine appropriate plyometric training period to develop lover limb explosive power,
  • To compare effect of plyometric training on the lower limbs acceleration and explosive power.

This research study follows the quantitative experimental model to achieve its objectives and find answers to the specific research problems. In the literature, to find the answers for these kinds of questions researchers used an experimental research design.

Findings:

Data gathered during this study showed improvement in dependent variables of a few subjects. Seven subjects indicated improvement of their long jump distance in posttest than the pretest (subjects 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9 and 10). Three subjects indicated decrement in long jump distance in posttest than the pretest (subject 1, 6 and 8). Subject 10 indicated equal effort in both pretest and posttest.

In the 25m dash run test five subjects showed reduction of the timing in posttest (subject 4, 5, 6, 9 and11). A timing decreased meant and increase in acceleration. Timings of all other subjects (1, 2, 3, 7, 8 and 10) increased in posttest. Timing increase meant a decrease in acceleration. Only four students showed improvement in both explosive power and acceleration.

In the standing long jump test subjects showed improvement as a group. In this test as the group mean value of jumping distances increased. The pretest mean value was 1.75 and posttest mean value was 1.82. Therefore, the mean value increased by 0.07 in post-testing. This was a 4% improvement relative to the pretest value. According to the 25m dash test, the mean value increased by 0.04 in post-testing relative to the pretest as a group. The posttest mean value increment indicated an increase in the time duration taken to run over the 25m distance as a group in post-testing. This increased time indicated a reduction of the acceleration in post-testing as a group. There was 0.8% decrement of acceleration.

Analyzed data showed that there was no significant different or improvement in dependent variables. In standing long jump data paired t-test showed that the P value was greater than the alpha value (p=0.101>0.05). Therefore there was no significant improvement in explosive power performance. In the 25m dash run too, the P value was greater than the alpha level (p=0.406) indicating a similar conclusion with respect to acceleration.

Measured variables of few subjects improved by some amounts although these slight increments varied from subject to subject due to the difference in physiological conditions among the subjects indicating different improvement levels. However, in contrast to previous studies (Rahim .R & Behpur. N, 2005), (Miller.M.G, et al, 2006), (Adams.K et al, 1992) this study showed dependent variables did not improved significantly.

According to this study explosive power and acceleration developed by some amount due to the six week training period. Trincomalee School and elite athletes had comparatively low performances level in sports competitions with other districts especially in athletics events and following these types of methods, there could be significant improvement of their performances.

Most of schools athletes participate in daily activities like farming, fishing, carrying heavy baggage, cycling etc. From these kinds of normal activities isometric, concentric and eccentric contractions seldom occur alone and in a slow manner. On the other hand they participate to sports competitions without proper training. Therefore these kind of normal activities do not improve sport performance levels. To achieve higher level of performances three types of muscles contraction should occur as a cyclic movement and in a rapid manner indicating a more systematic engagement requirement for enhancing performances.

Plyometric are the training technique that contributes to rapid contraction of muscles and to develop According to this study Trincomalee school students showed some improvement of their explosiveness and in acceleration due to the plyometric training program although this improvement was not significant. However, further training under this kind of regimen can achieve considerable improvement.

One objective of the Trincomalee sports development program was to enhance performance levels in school athletes. From this study the provincial educational ministry can extract some lessons on how to develop athlete’s performance in running events. Towards this, school physical education teachers and school athletes can also follow the procedure in this study to improve the performances of their athletes.
